Medorem Crawford papers, 1868-1873.

The Medorem Crawford Papers consist of a small amount of correspondence and a diary written by Medorem Crawford, Jr., while a member of the military party entrusted with establishing a U.S. Army post at Kenai, Alaska. The papers, which date to the period 1868-1873, include reports of the wreck of the vessel "Torrent" off Dangerous Cape in 1868, a diary account of the establishment of Fort Kenay (1869), several letters describing life at Fort Kenay, and biographical material. The collection also includes a portrait of Medorem Crawford, Jr., dating to 1898.

Medorem Crawford, Jr. (1844-1921) was a member of one of Oregon's early pioneer families. His distinguished career in the United States Army included participation in the expedition dispatched in 1868 to establish a U.S. military post on Alaska's Cook Inlet. That expedition nearly ended in disaster with the sinking of its vessel "Torrent" off Dangerous Cape, but returned in 1869 to build Fort Kenay at present-day Kenai, Alaska.
